Networks and Optical Communications

The Networks and Optical communications (NOC) group has been established in 2002 as one of the first research groups at “Athens Information Technology (AIT). The primary objectives of the NOC group are to:

  • Perform research on high-speed, high-capacity network service protocols and architectures.
  • Study and develop novel network architectures and innovative transport solutions for telecommunication services and internet applications.
  • Promote new application specific product opportunities in cutting edge technologies.
  • Perform techno-economic studies for broadband networks.

The NOC group has been actively involved in novel research and consulting activities in the broader field of optical communications and networking, covering aspects related with optical transport solutions, network design, resource optimization and techno-economic evaluation.

The latest targeted research areas include: passive optical access networks, optical front-haul and back-haul for 5G networks, optical core networks and data centre interconnects.

Major fields of technology expertise and related capabilities:

  • Network design, deployment and dimensioning studies for access networks, optical backhauling solutions and datacentre interconnects.
  • Network planning solutions at both IP and optical layer.
  • Dynamic network resource optimization, including multi-layer (IP-Optical) approaches and handling of different type of demands and service requests (bandwidth, latency, availability, security, etc.).
  • Physical layer performance evaluations for different type of signal formats and impairment aware routing.
  • Cost evaluation of new technologies/modules and comparisons with existing solutions.
  • System and network level techno-economic analysis for new technologies and networking approaches.
  • Switching node designs and performance evaluation studies (including elastic and SDM-based optical networks)
  • Advanced recirculating loop based WDM transmission evaluations, including also loop-in-a-loop configurations for add/drop and channel routing testing.
  • Access network test-bed for OLT/ONU & ODN performance evaluation
  • Advanced 4-node data and control plane test-bed for core network physical layer simulation studies and protocol implementation
  • Optical/Optoelectronic subsystem and module testing and characterization

Developed software solutions:

  • Network planning tool with impairment aware optimization options (in Matlab and C)
  • Multi-layer network model able to operate in dynamic (online) or planning (offline) mode and handle different type of traffic demands (in Net2Plan with java-based modules)
  • Analytic performance evaluation models for WDM coherent data transmission (in Matlab).
  • Accurate system models for Directly Modulated Laser, 4-PAM. and OFDM transmitters (in VPI)
  • Cost evaluation tools for optical and multi-layer network solutions, based on 3 different network equipment cost models.

Available and updated data models

  • Cost models for access ODN (optical distribution network) infrastructures. Models consider both urban/dense urban and rural deployment costs.
  • Cost models for network modules (Transceivers, nodes, line cards, link modules etc.). Models are based both on list prices and negotiated prices by operators.
  • Network topology and traffic prediction models for:
    • Large scale and international networks: The Pan-European GEANT network and the US NSF network
    • Major operators’ national networks: Orange France, Deutsche Telecom, Telefonica Spain, Orange Poland, Telecom Italia and British Telecom
    • Regional network topologies: specific areas in France, Spain and Greece

Hardware (lab) inventory:

  • Transmission test-bed based on an advanced recirculating loop set-up supporting 80 channels C-band 50 GHz channel spacing and 40 L-band transmitters, with 5 amplifier spans and a variety of fibre types (SMF, LEAF, Truewave and corresponding dispersion maps).
  • 160Gb/s OTDM transmission capabilities with 10GHz Mode Locked laser and OTDM
  • Test equipment: 10Gbit/s BERT set, 40Gbit/s Communications analyzer, OSA
  • Amplifiers: C- and L-band EDFAs, Raman, SOAs, EDWAs
  • MEMS switches (8×8 and 16×16)
  • Programmable (software defined) FPGA based transmitter receiver modules for up to 8×12.5Gb/s
  • C- and L-band Dynamic Channel Equalizer
  • 10Gb/s forward error correction and channel equalization modules
  • Various optical components (e.g. filters, switches etc)
