About AIT

AIT is a non-profit, private research organization that combines its talented scientific personnel, industry links and partnerships to foster advanced research in innovative technologies.

The thematic focus of our research activity is on Information and Communication Technologies and Innovation Management.

Despite its young age, having been founded only in 2002, AIT has already a proven prowess in research excellence, as evidenced by its large research output, its numerous distinctions, and the large number of research grants it has received.

AIT wishes to transfer its research knowledge and experience to the business world and the society and for that it offers R&D solutions, Innovation services and Lifelong Learning Programs

On the basis of its Legal Statutes, AIT is in full compliance with the following definition of a Research organization (Source: 'Community framework for state aid for research and development and innovation' (2006/C 323/01)).

"Research organization means an entity, such as university or research institute, irrespective of its legal status (organized under public or private law) or way of financing, whose primary goal is to conduct fundamental researchindustrial research or experimental development and to disseminate their results by way of teaching, publication or technology transfer; all profits are reinvested in these activities, the dissemination of their results or teaching; undertakings that can exert influence upon such an entity, in the quality of, for example, shareholders or members, shall enjoy no preferential access to the research capacities of such an entity or to the research results generated by it."

AIT is a private, non-profit scientific society, established under the legal name “Research and Education Laboratory in Information Technologies” and distinct title “Athens Information Technology”.

AIT’s Purpose is to advance and promote Science, Technology, Research, Training and Innovation to the benefit of the society.

The General Assembly (GA) of the Society’s Members is the ultimate decision-making body of the Society. The Society is managed by the Board of Directors (BoD). The Members of the BoD are elected by the GA. The President of the BoD is the Legal Representative of the Society.

For reasons of proper functioning of the Society, a Managing Director is appointed, in accordance with article 11 par. 5 of the Society’s Articles of Association. The Managing Director reports to the Board of Directors and has clearly defined authorities and responsibilities.

AIT’s premises are located in Marousi, at the heart of the Technology and Business Centre of Athens. The premises host office and meeting spaces and an advanced laboratory infrastructure.

Specialized labs are used to support AIT’s scientific and research work in the context of EU and industrial RDI projects. New technologies are designed, developed and tested and realistic demonstrations are implemented. AIT’s Lab infrastructure has amassed, over the years, a number of hardware and software equipment, components and testbeds for the various research experiments that it conducts. These include, most notably, the following:

  • MIMO modems
  • Wireless sensor testbed
  • Antennas
  • Antenna fabrication facility
  • Audio – Visual Sensors
  • Transmission test-bed based on an advanced recirculating loop set-up 
  • 160Gb/s OTDM transmission capabilities with 10GHz Mode Locked laser and OTDM
  • Test equipment: 10Gbit/s BERT set, 40Gbit/s Communications analyzer, portable spectrum analyzer, oscilloscope
  • Amplifiers: C- and L-band EDFAs, Raman, SOAs, EDWAs
  • MEMS switches (8x8 and 16x16)
  • Programmable (software defined) FPGA based transmitter receiver modules for up to 8x12.5Gb/s
  • C- and L-band Dynamic Channel Equalizer
  • 10Gb/s forward error correction and channel equalization modules
  • Various hardware components (e.g. filters, frequency generators, microcontroller boards, switching circuits, sensors,  etc.)

The Labs are also equipped with a number of software packages that are used for designs and simulations, including tools for algorithmic design, electromagnetic simulation, network simulation and planning, techno-economic analysis, etc.
