AIT’s B-WiSE team members Muhammad Tariq, Nithin Babu, Konstantinos Ntougias, Dimitris Ntaikos and Constantinos Papadias participated in the recent Summer School and Review Meeting of the European Commission’s Innovative Training Network (ITN) Project PAINLESS – http://painless-itn.com/ (which deals with the topic of energy-autonomous portable access points such as integrated on drones or robots) at the University of Cyprus.

The Summer School (see http://painless-itn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Review-Meeting-exteral-updated.pdf) was given during Sept. 9-10, 2019, on topics related to the project’s scientific fields, ranging from wireless basics to UAV-based networks to wireless powered communication. Dr. Ntaikos taught a course on the basics of antenna systems and propagation;
Dr. Papadias on advanced antenna systems for next generation networks; and Mr. Ntougias on radio resource management, as well as a non-technical course on the writing and presentation of scientific work. The School was well attended by both project members (including all 15 of the PAINLESS early stage researchers – ESRs)  and externals (with a total number of 66 attendees) – it was also offered via live broadcast by the University of Cyprus. The provided training received very favorable reviews based on the requested feedback questionnaire.

A full day project meeting took place on Sept 11, during which technical discussions took place and all ESRs discussed their research plans, thematic synergies and upcoming collaborations. On the final day of Sept 12 the official (mid-term) project review took place, with the participation of the Project Officer (PO), Ms. Nina Poumpalova, from the European Commission’s Research Executive Agency. All ESRs, including Muhammad Tariq (ESR#2) and Nithin Babu (ESR#10)  presented brief overviews of their background and research plans to the PO, and received from her feedback regarding their training and benefits / responsibilities as prescribed by the European Training Networks (ETN) Program.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on upcoming dissemination and training opportunities, such as at the European Researchers Night (https://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/actions/european-researchers-night_en) and the 1st PAINLESS Winter School which is planned to be held within 2020.
