EUROFOS Summer School The EUROFOS Summer School run in parallel with AIT's summer school on "Sensor Web & Future Internet" (that took place between June 29 and July 10) and focused on issues related to optical transmission, components, systems and optical access networks. Hot research topics in future-proven photonics technology were presented by Eurofos professors, in an introductive and comprehensive way for interested students and prospective researchers. The covered areas included aspects for facing the challenges that come with the evolution and deployment of the permanently growing demand for communication in information age. Ultra-high capacity transmission systems have been developed in the past years and are about to convey the large amount of data with rates of multiple Terabit per second from future internet applications such as 3D High-Definition television. Photonic integration plays here an important role due to cost efficiency and reliability. Optical amplification allows extending the reach of nowadays networks spans to several 100 kilometers, while the capacity for the transmission over an optical fiber is increased further by expanding the limits given by the media. The topology of the transmission network is supposed to adapt to the traffic demands for future networks, ensuring a rapid and efficient delivery of large amounts of data. Such networks need intelligent nodes with photonic switching between their interfaces, avoiding the limitations of traditional and slow purely electronic subsystems. All-optical designs of several network elements is not only a big step towards the future internet once realized, but also a big challenge for nowadays researchers who are working on novel designs for photonic devices, maturing them for future optical subsystems. Besides all the effort in bringing optical networks to a new evolutional era, the narrowest bottle-neck in the last kilometers towards the customers will still reside. Focus was therefore given on methods for access with optical infrastructure instead of the already outdated telephone-lines towards houses. Together with an optical fiber and a powerful modem at the desk, the way to future applications like video-on-demand, teleconferencing or high-definition television was opened! EuroFOS partners participated in the EuroFOS Summer School for free. For more information on the venue and assistance on accommodation:
Students' Views "An excellent program, especially for those who are interested in information engineering, technology, and telecommunication. I recommend it with out any hesitation since it prepares students to enter the future community of technology and information engineering."
