Advanced Summer School

Summer School on Future Internet & Sensor Web (SENSEWEB09)
June 29  - July 10, 2009

Building on the success of the 2005 AIT Summer School on ‘Emerging ICT Technologies’, the 2006 Summer School on ‘Next Generation Computing Systems’, the 2007 Summer School on ‘Recent Advances in Telecommunications, Networking and Distributed Computing Systems’, and the 2008 Summer School on “Leading Edge Network and Service Infrastructures”, AIT organized its 5th consecutive Summer School for undergraduate/graduate students. The 2009 Summer School was titled ‘Future Internet and Sensor Web” and took place June 29 to July 10 2009, at the AIT premises in Peania. Eighteen participants from 9 countries (China, Greece, Jordan, Turkey, Italy, Indonesia, France and Serbia) had the opportunity to attend a balanced mix of courses, laboratory activities, social events, excursion programs and visits to the INTRACOM group of companies. The seminars were addressed mostly to students and professionals from computer science, computational science, engineering and application backgrounds. Top-notch students were awarded scholarships. Two Jordanian students were awarded Queen Rania Scholarships.

The program was structured into two weekly modules:
1. The Sensor Web, which covered Current trends in distributed computing, Sensor Signal Processing (with emphasis on A/V processing), Semantic Computing, RFID Systems and Applications, Context Aware Computing, as well as technologies underpinning the Internet of the Things (IoT).
2. Telecommunications and Networking for the Future Internet which dealt with Overview & Current Trends in Networking & Telecommunications, Future Data Networks & Internet, Emerging Wireless Networks, Forward-looking Optical Networks and Network Security.
Among the highlights of this year’s Summer School were two talks by Sun Microsystems evangelists on storage practice lead, as well as leading edge enterprise Java technologies.

Moreover, Athens Information Technology organized the first EUROFOS Summer School in its premises, which run in parallel with AIT's summer school on "Sensor Web & Future Internet", between July 8 & 10, 2009. EUROFOS Summer School focused on issues related to optical transmission, components, systems and optical access networks. Hot research topics in future-proven photonics technology were offered by EUROFOS professors in an introductive and comprehensive way for interested students and prospective researchers.

The Summer School’s social program included swimming events in Varkiza, social dinners, visits to the Acropolis Museum and a one day trip to Sounio. Social events created a warm, friendly and collaborative atmosphere among the participants.
Overall, participants expressed their satisfaction in attending a high quality summer school which also included a rich variety of social activities.

Athens Information Technology (AIT) acknowledges the valuable support from all the sponsors of this summer school including INTRACOM Holdings, Hellas On Line, Sun Microsystems, KERDOS, City Press, Flash.gr, kariera.gr, OnLine, PC Magazine, ICT Plus and Mad Radio.
