Athens Information Technology (AIT), a Center of Excellence for Research and Graduate Education, announces its international 2010 Summer School under the umbrella title “Pervasive Networks and the Web of Things”. AIT summer schools are an annual unique opportunity offered to students and professionals to enrich their background in the areas of information technology, telecommunications and technology management. The programme includes lectures and lab training on leading edge ICT technologies covering subjects such as high performance networking, optical networks, sensor networks, pervasive computing, semantic computing, sensor signal’s processing, ICT security, sensor fusion, pervasive grid computing, as well as related applications. This year’s programme will include several social events (e.g., beach parties, swimming events, visits to Greek archaeological sites), which bring the participants closer and create a warm collaborative atmosphere.
More specifically, AIT summer seminars:
Are organized by Athens Information Technology (AIT), a Center of Excellence for Research and Graduate Education. Through its unique collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburg, PA), AIT is the sole European organization to offer the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University Degree.
Are held at the state-of-the-art facilities of Athens Information Technology, which include large auditoriums with audio-visual capabilities and unique, leading-edge laboratories. The premises are located in the Athens suburb of Peania, with frequent and convenient connections to the center of Athens, where participants can visit world-class museums and the numerous other sightseeing venues of the 2004 Olympic city.
Offer a balanced mix of courses, laboratory activities, and social events, as well as visits to INTRACOM S.A, the largest IT and Telecom industry in Southeastern Europe.
Are structured in two independent weekly modules enabling students to customize their participation to different leaning objectives and schedules.
Include excursion programs allowing students to get to know both ancient and modern Greece, while at the same time providing exciting recreation opportunities.
Are built on the experience of the previous AIT Summer Schools, which were warmly embraced by numerous Greek and international participants.
Are held in early July, the peak of Greece’s beautiful summer season.
The 2010 summer school builds on the successes of past summer schools namely the 2005 AIT Summer School on ‘Emerging ICT Technologies’, the 2006 AIT Summer School on ‘Next Generation Computing Systems’, the 2007 AIT Summer School on ‘Recent Advances in Telecommunications, Networking and Distributed Computing Systems’, the 2008 Summer School on “Leading Edge Network and Service Infrastructures”, and the 2009 Summer School on “Future Internet and Sensor Web”, which brought together 158 students from Albania, Armenia, Austria, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Denmark, Ethiopia, France, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, India, Jordan, Korea, Malawi, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey and Tunisia, and were conducted with great success. In organizing the 2010 Summer School, AIT takes into account the experience gained from these Summer Schools, as well as related students’ feedback.
From a thematic point of view the 2010 summer school is devoted to two main interrelated ICT trends, namely the Future Internet (FI) and the Internet-of-Things (IoT). The school will offer a multidisciplinary program including courses and laboratory activities on the full range of IT and networking technologies comprising the FI and IoT vision. Courses and learning activities will complement each other in order to collectively illustrate the vision, along with the technology directions required to turn the vision to reality.
The program will consist of two weekly modules enabling participants to focus on a networking track or on a Web-of-Things track or both. This modular structure of the programme enables students to customize the program according to their learning objectives, preferences and expectations. Students attending both modules will obtain a multiple benefit, since they will be exposed to a broader range of complementary technologies.
In particular, the first module, titled "Pervasive Networking for the Future Internet" will include topics/areas such as:
- State-of-the-art in Networking & Telecommunications,
- Future Data Networks & Internet, Emerging Wireless Networks,
- Optical Networks,
- Ambient & Intelligent Networks, Sensor &
- Ad-hoc networks, as well as Network Security.
The second module, titled: "Web of Things", will comprise lectures and laboratory exercises on topics/areas such as:
- Emerging distributed computing paradigms,
- Cloud computing, sensors’ signal processing (with emphasis on A/V processing),
- The semantic web,
- RFID systems and applications,
- Context aware computing, as well as other technologies underpinning the Web of the Things.
Note that the Web-of-Things paradigm considers everything-as-a-thing (e.g., people are “things”, services are “things”, objects are “things”), which asks for new semantic models and network/service interoperability techniques that will be presented during the lectures.
Who should attend?
Students and professionals from computer science, computational science, engineering and application backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The school is designed to accommodate students with diverse academic backgrounds. Following the completion of the summer school, participants will receive a certification of their studies.

The Program
A tentative Program, will be updated on our site soon.
Fees
The participation fee per module, which includes tuition, reading materials, lab costs, coffee breaks, is 350€. A reduced fee of 600€ will apply to participants enrolling for both modules of the program. A limited number of scholarships may be awarded on the basis of merit and need. Please visit http://www.ait.edu.gr/ait_web_site/scholarships.jsp to be informed on scholarships offered. All participants will be expected to organize and fund their own travel to and from Greece to take part in this program.
Cancellation Policy
No Registration Fee will be retained if the participant submits a written cancellation three weeks before the commencement of the Summer School, i.e. June 7, 2010.
50% of the Registration Fee will be retained if the participant submits a written cancellation four days before the Summer School starts i.e. June 24, 2010.
100% of the Registration Fee will be retained for cancellations during the last three days (25, 26, 27 June, 2010), as well as for no show-ups.
Extra-Curricular Activities
A couple of daily excursion programs will be organized during the Summer School. These programs will allow students to meet Ancient Greek monuments and locations (e.g. Acropolis), as well as aspects of modern Greece (e.g. tour to Saronic Gulf Islands, Athens 2004 Olympic Venues). Moreover, participants will have relaxing opportunities in the scope of social events such as dinners, beach parties and swimming events.
