Broadband Wireless & Sensor Networks Research Area

Research Topics

B-WiSE group’s research interests and expertise are multidisciplinary in that they include not only the traditional aspects of networking technology but also the many aspects of signal processing at the application level and statistical communications and coding at the physical MAC and routing layers. The main focus of our current research is on short-range wireless communications, with specific applications in the following fields:

4G Communications
Study and evaluation of 4G access networks and novel broadband radio interfaces next-generation broadband radio interfaces (e.g. Multi-carrier modulation schemes such as OFDMA, Space-Time coding)

Mobile Ad-hoc & Mesh Networks (WPAN / WLAN & WMAN protocols and architectures)

Study and performance evaluation of wireless ad-hoc networks with an emphasis on achievable capacity, range gains and achievable power savings (see the figure below for some example topologies). Studies and performance evaluation of wireless Personal / Body Area networks. physical model includes the use of directional antennas, enabling the switching of the antennas’ lobe at will and the finding of direction of arrival (DoA) of the signal. Two variants of Aloha and one CSMA are the major MAC protocols implemented. At the network layer, emphasis was given on SPEED and its enhancements. Finally, the user is provided with a configuration file to set its inputs, an excel output file holding all the statistics of the simulation and an interactive GUI showing the flow of information across the sensor nodes.

The B-WiSE Group has implemented the SENSASIM which is a Java-based simulator for wireless multi-hop networks using directional antennas. The simulator can be used for any ad hoc wireless network, but focus has been given on the more energy-limited and constrained sensor networks.

Re-Configurability, Cross-layer Optimization, Fault tolerance

Study and performance evaluation of wireless ad-hoc networks with an emphasis on cross-layer optimization techniques, implementation aspects, network organization and fault tolerance (see e.g. the Honeynet example shown in the figure below).

Modulation schemes and radios used for home Networking - Ultra Wideband Radio & Broadband Multimedia Networking and Sensor Devices & Networks Architectures of Smart Sensor Networks Design Study and performance evaluation of wireless networks using smart nodes architectures having smart antenna systems Design Distributed Signal Processing & Compression Design Study and performance evaluation of MAC Designs & Routing Algorithms for Ad-Hoc Networks Design Environmental Risk Management Design Combination of wireless sensor networks and simulation tools for environmental risk management including wildfire detection, wildfire spreading forecasting and landslide prediction.

Design Intelligent Transport System

Design Wireless Multimedia Communications

Design End-to-end Quality-of-Service (QoS), Content Protection
Design Secure delivery of multimedia data and services across heterogeneous wired and wireless networks to the home and automobile. Model-free measurement based QoS provisioning for multimedia services. Wireless link modelling for Quality of Service support in wireless networks Design Location Aware Services (e.g. Shopping Advertisements)

Design Implementation of a location aware, personalized advertisement and event notification service over WiFi access networks to PDAs and laptop computers.

Design Techno-Economics of Wireless / Backhaul Networks

Design The wireless mesh networking (WMN) architecture, as opposed to the Point-to-Multipoint architecture, emerges as a promising solution with a lot of potential for the wireless broadband access. The B-WiSE group has developed a techno-economic analysis framework for the evaluation of service deployment strategies over a variety of broadband access technologies and network solutions. By incorporating business, marketing and technical specific parameters, the proposed model can be used in order to evaluate the commercial feasibility and competitiveness of alternative solutions, and provide the most cost effective solution for the broadband access to the core network.  [ref: D. Vogiatzis, N.B. Pronios, et la., “Metropolitan Wireless Access Networks: A Techno-economic Analysis Framework”, FITCE 45th Congress, 30 Aug – 2 Sep. 2006 Athens,Greece].

Students' Views

"The dormitory in which international students are situated is a story by itself and it represents AIT efforts to satisfy all students’ needs and bring a “home” atmosphere much closer, preventing even the most sensitive students from being homesick. For someone who never felt how it is to live together and share an academic and daily life with the friends from all over the world, it is hard to describe the flavor of cooked food in the late evening (early morning) hours, when all of the students return to the dorm, hungry and tired from 24+2 hours long working day. At this moment, the kitchen would become a big pan, where all national specialties would be cooked, starting from spicy - Venezuelan; full of salad - Lebanese; good boiled - Iranian; low caloric - Botswana; fishy - Philippine’s and other international meals. In a word, unforgettable experiences."
