Compact switched parasitic array (SPA)

AIT B-WiSE group was the pioneer in designing, optimizing and implementing a compact parasitic antennas with a single RF chain for emulating MIMO terminal by parasitically controlling the active element of the SPA. (see figure)
The antenna design and development was performed in collaboration with Julien Perruisseau-Carrier (CTTC).

Mimo testbed

B-WiSE Group has a 2x3 MIMO testbed which can be found here.

With this testbed and the SPA anlague MIMO transmission with 1 RF front end has been achieved. Following are the specification used for the MIMO transmission experiment used for 3-element ESPAR antenna array.

  • BPSK Modulation
  • Baseband Frequency  - 500 kHz
  • Baseband signal   - Raised cosine
  • Training sequence  - 8 symbols
  • Burst size   - 410x2 symbols
  • Switching signal level  - 8 V
  • V-BLAST with Zero Forcing Equalizer at the receiver

The Bit Error Rate (BER) is calculated by comparing the bit streams. BER performances are evaluated with different SNR levels. The following Figure shows a comparison of BER performances with SNR for three scenarios.

"Away from AIT, life in Greece is a combination of the East and the West. The beautiful seaside, the wide variety of islands, the northern forests, the ancient monuments, the Greek food, the Greek culture, the warm hearted Greeks and the nice weather around the year all form an enjoyable experience of Greece. All of that made me feel as though I was on a long vacation, side by side to my studies at AIT."
