Research Prototypes
Research undertaken in the context of research projects or the everyday operations in AIT, has led to the development of research prototypes and demonstrators, a number of which are maintained as sustainable services to the community:
- The ZEUS e-learning portal for the lifelong training of multi-grade schoolteachers in remote areas on ICT related topics, accessible at: http://homer.ait.gr:8080/dias/dias_login.jsp
- The Grid-Based Sensasim Simulator of Wireless Sensor Networks, which integrates a chatting mechanism for the collaboration of remote students and tutors in synchronous lab sessions. It has been a first step towards the implementation of Virtual Scientific Experiments (VSEs) and synchronous virtual labs towards the realization of virtual campuses. The simulator is accessible at: http://palantir.ait.gr:8888/Sensasim/
- The learning content repository and management portal for e-learning content creators, aggregators and distributors efficient collaboration and resource exchange. The first deployment has been in the context of BASE2, to allow for the cooperation and easy resource exchange among content creators and aggregators. The repository and content management portal may be easily extended to be used in other contexts. The repository is accessible at: http://palantir.ait.gr:8080/base2/base2?action=login
- Through the long-term experience in e-learning and distance learning paradigms through both the everyday educational activities of AIT but also the area’s involvement in relevant research projects and research on novel e-learning practices, with a vision to invest on novel learning practices and pioneer in deploying them in its everyday operation, AIT has invested in an internal project that this area is developing, concerning the development of an advanced e-learning platform that integrates a learning portal, a learning management/content management system, support for differentiating learning communities, and collaboration and live streaming tools into a web-based platform that provides single sign-on capabilities to all these tools. The platform, named OWL-I, may be used to setup courses for various target groups and disciplines, to setup communities not essentially involved in learning and education but wishing to share the same collaboration space and virtual resources, etc. A first deployment case has been the use of this advanced platform in the context of the BASE2 project, where two different virtual communities and relevant courses of interest have been setup for agrarian and maritime communities. The platform is accessible at: http://palantir.ait.gr/base2/dmz/

"Greece was invented for summer holidays. I have not seen all of it, but the best places are on the islands, especially the Ciclades group of islands. Because Athens is a big modern metropolis, nice and expensive place to live, you can find people with different cultures from all over the world."
Lazar Adjigogov, MSIN 2005 (FYROM)
