Major Scientific Contributions
The major scientific achievements in this area have been:
- Two recent best paper awards, namely:
-Th. Pliakas, G. Kormentzas, S. Tsekeridou, Joint Scalable Video Coding and Packet Prioritization for Video Streaming over IP/802.11e Heterogeneous Networks, 3rd International Mobile Multimedia Communications Conference (MobiMedia 2007), Nafpaktos, Greece, August 27-29, 2007
-Th. Perperis, S. Tsekeridou, S. Theodoridis, An Ontological Approach to Semantic Video Analysis for Violence Identification, Multimedia Metadata Applications (M3A) Workshop, Innovations Conference for Knowledge Management, New Media Technologies and Semantic Technologies (Triple-i: i-Know, i-Semantics, i-Media), Graz, Austria, September 5-7, 2007
- Co-chair of the 3rd ACM International Conference on Digital Interactive Media in Entertainment and Arts – DIMEA 2008 (http://www.dimea2008.org), and co-editor of its proceedings, in collaboration with ACM for their inclusion to the ACM Digital Library. DIMEA 2008 takes place at AIT premises.
- Participation to the Program Committee of many international conferences and workshops (some recent ones: MRCS2006, AIAI2006, WIAMIS 2007, AIAI 2007, FG 2008, etc.).
- Member of the IASTED Technical Committee on The Web, Internet and Multimedia for the term 2007-2010.
- Being the W3C representative on behalf of AIT, contribution to the work and the deliverables of its Multimedia Semantics Incubator group.
- Contribution to TV Anytime, Phase 2 specifications.
- Expert reviewer and evaluator by EU for the review of a number of EU-funded R&D projects and of proposals submitted to FP6 and FP7 calls for proposals.
- Guest co-editor of the special issue: “Ubiquitous e-Learning Solutions over Heterogeneous Networks” of the ACM Personal and Ubiquitous Computing Journal, expected publication date in 2007.
- Many publications, including book chapters, and articles in well-known international journals and conferences. Citations to these publications are more than 100. A number of publications are referenced by approved patents, such as those of Digimarc Inc. and Canon on digital watermarking of images for copyright protection.
- Reference in recent editions of Who is Who in the World and Who is Who in Science and Engineering, Marquis.
- Recognition of a MSIN master student who undertook an independent study on Violence Identification in Movies, as the Student Spotlight in the area of the Future of Video Monitoring, at the Information Networking Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, USA, where he continued this research as part of his thesis work.

AIT's 1st Gaming Forum a Success!

AIT's 1st Gaming Forum was a two day celebration of Gaming that brought together the Greek gaming industry with academics and gaming enthusiasts of all ages. The Gaming Forum was co-organized with the British Council and Cowboy Tv and realized thanks to the support of Grand Sponsor hellas online, Gold Sponsor intralot, Sponsor the EU project KnowInG and Grand Communication Sponsor MTV.

"It is not the solution all of us to go abroad" said Mr. Robby Bourlas, Managing Director of the Public, Multirama and getitnow.gr addressing to 44 students representing Greece, Cyprus, Jordan, Romania, Malawi, and Armenia, graduated with a MSc in Management of Business, Innovation & Technology (MBIT) from AIT. "You can still find business opportunities in Greece, as long as you believe it. In a difficult period like the one we live in, it is just harder to find these opportunities."
