STUDIES
March 2005 – June 2008: “Techno-Economic Systems” Master’s program, offered jointly by the National Technical University of Athens, the University of Athens and the University of Piraeus.

August 2003 – December 2004: MSIN Master’s program (Master of Science in Information Networking) offered by Carnegie Mellon University in collaboration with Athens Information Technology (ΑΙΤ).

  • Thesis Subject: “Elastic Bunch Graph Matching Face Recognition: Performance and Comparison with Subspace Projection Methods”, Supervisor: Associate Professor A. Pnevmatikakis.

September 1998 – July 2003: Graduate of the Electronic & Computer Engineering Department of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), with specialization in Electronics & Control Systems Design. GPA: 8.42/10.00 (Very Good).

  • Thesis Subject: “Design of a 0.35μm CMOS Analog Integrated RF Mixer”, Supervisor: Assistant Professor I. Papananos.


WORK EXPERIENCE
June 2008 – now: Researcher for the Autonomic & Grid Computing (AGC) Group of Athens Information Technology (AIT).

  • Work on two industrial projects for Intralot S.A., (a) development of image processing software for reading and decoding of lottery tickets using a camera, and (b) implementation of a platform for virtual horse racing applications.
  • Work in the scope of the EU-funded HERMES – Cognitive Care and Guidance for Active Aging Project (FP7-216709), contributing to the project deliverable D4.1, ‘Initial HERMES Audio and Video Processing Technologies’.
  • Work in the scope of the EU-funded My-e-Director 2012 - Real-Time Context-Aware and Personalized Media Streaming Environments for Large Scale Broadcasting Applications Project (FP7-215248), contributing to the project deliverable D3.2, ‘Environment Analysis Module’.
  • Contribution to the software prototyping of AIT’s submission to the TRECVid08 Evaluation for Event Detection, organized by NIST.
  • Contribution to the software prototyping of AIT’s submission to the Multiple Biometric Grand Challenge (MBGC), organized by NIST.

December 2004 – April 2007: Researcher for the Autonomic & Grid Computing (AGC) Group of Athens Information Technology (AIT).

  • Work in the scope of the EU-funded Project CHIL (Computers in the Human Interaction Loop) on the development and implementation of audio-visual perceptual human-machine interfaces. Numerous Publications & working systems were produced as a result.
  • The outcomes of this research were installed in the AGC’s Smart Lab and formed part of the backbone for a service designed to facilitate corporate meetings and presentations.
  • Contribution to CHIL project deliverable D.4.5, ‘Basic System for Audio Activity Detection’, January 2005.
  • Contribution to CHIL project deliverable D.4.6, ‘Audio-Visual Person Identification and Identity Verification’, June 2005.

December 2004 – April 2006: Translation and revising of technical specifications and user manuals for consumer electronics products for N. Katsarakis E.E..

August – November 2002: Internship with Texas Instruments in Freising, Germany, as part of the IAESTE (International Association for Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) program. The goal was to evaluate the design of a Voltage-Controlled Oscillator (VCO) circuit, a subsystem of a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) device. Supervisor: Herr Horst Jungert.

PURSUIT & ATTRACTION OF RESEARCH FUNDING

Considerable experience in the writing, coordination and pursuit of European funded proposals. In particular, in the period 2005-2007, Mr. Andreas Stergiou worked with the AGC group on the pursuit of three EU proposals: RESTORE, AMPERE, and MARVELOUS.
Integral writing role in the successful nationally-funded (PRIAMOS (GSRT)) research project proposals.

Familiarity with design tools for analog (Cadence) and digital (VHDL) circuitry.
