Athens Information Technology collaborates with Carnegie Mellon’s Information Networking Institute (INI), an integral department of Carnegie Mellon’s College of Engineering, and offers the Master of Science in Information Networking (MSIN) program, awarding a Carnegie Mellon degree.
The Information Networking Institute is a collaboration of the CMU School of Computer Science, the CMU Tepper School of Business, and the CMU Heinz School of Public Policy and Management.

Environment at AIT

Our students experience a friendly, state-of-the-art environment, an embodiment of Greek hospitality and educational/scientific excellence. The student body is an international, Culturally -diverse, group of motivated and talented individuals, who enjoy a community of learning and life at AIT. Guided by renowned professors and scientists they form a dynamic educational and research environment. The unique feature of the MSIN program is that students are taught both by CMU and AIT professors, thus the best of both worlds and allowing them to pursue Thesis Projects and Independent Studies on both sides of the Atlantic. Supported by student and career services, the AIT community shares a common commitment and determination to excel in the fields of IT, Networks, Innovation and Management. Students are given the opportunity to explore and visit sites, rich with Greek history, and experience life in this fast-paced, European capital.

The AIT campus is located in Peania, just a few kilometers outside the center of Athens. Students can take advantage of a modern infrastructure, with the latest technology, including wireless networking, interactive amphitheaters, distance learning and fully-equipped laboratories. Students also have access to the AIT campus library, the online Carnegie Mellon books and publications, as well as to the AIT dormitory, restaurant, and entertainment facilities.

Program Overview

The MSIN is an intensive, 16-month (full-time) or alternatively a 32-month (part-time), graduate program that gives students a solid foundation in information technology, telecommunications and networking while introducing them to management, strategic thinking, and policy, with the opportunity to study each of these areas in greater depth through electives. All classes and coursework are in English. This selective program targets Electrical Engineering and Computer Science majors and accepts up to 20 students each year. The program is fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the degree is conferred by Carnegie Mellon. A curriculum option allows students to choose a Professional Track or Research Track to develop an area of specialization. MSIN students acquire the necessary skills to pursue leadership, technical, and management positions in a variety of sectors and industries. Graduates of the MSIN program can pursue a Ph.D. and academic track or directly enter a range of careers, including software engineer, networking engineer, technology consultant, IT analyst, computer systems consultant, systems & software engineer, development manager, IT security officer, project manager, financial software developer, entry level strategic management positions, security consultant.

Objectives

This program is designed to prepare students to:

Acquire detailed understanding of the technical, management and policy aspects of information networking and computer systems
Gain theoretical understanding and practical experience in building networked and distributed computer systems
Gain detailed understanding of the design principles and tradeoffs made in information networking infrastructures
Manage the development and evolution of reliable and secure information networks and computer systems
Gain expertise in managing and troubleshooting large scale information networks and distributed systems
Gain detailed understanding of establishing requirements in complex applications and translating these requirements into a design architecture
Learn theoretical as well as practical aspects of database management systems
Acquire an understanding of microeconomics theory with an emphasis on business applications
Acquire an understanding of business management functions including accounting, finance, human relations, marketing and operations with an emphasis in information systems
Equip themselves with skills to assume leadership positions in information networking

INI students graduate with a knowledge of business and communications that enables them to more thoroughly understand the market for which they are designing products and to anticipate possible complications in the business aspects of the development process. This ability to understand the entirety of the technology development process allows an INI graduate to design products that satisfy a client’s needs beyond the technological.

Program Summary

In order to successfully complete the MSIN program, the student should take 10 courses (6 core and 4 elective courses) and the graduate project (159 units).

Duration of the program: Full-time students: 16 months
Part-time students: 32 months
Course load is defined as those courses for which the student is registered at any time.
a) Number of Course Load per Semester for Full-Time students (Fall and Spring Semesters) The minimum full-time course load in the MSIN program is 3 courses per semester. Students taking less than the minimum load must secure written permission from the MSIN Program Coordinator. The maximum course load in the program is 4 courses per semester. Students taking more than the maximum load must secure written permission from the MSIN Program Coordinator.
b) Number of Course Load per Semester for Part-Time Students The minimum part-time course load in the MSIN program is 3 courses per year. Students taking less than the minimum load must secure written permission from the MSIN Program Coordinator. The maximum course load in the program is 6 courses per year. Students taking more than the maximum load must secure written permission from the MSIN Program Coordinator.
